Our Sunday Date: Tapas, Gelato, and BGC Discoveries
October 11 was Sunday—our designated date day! After attending the anticipated Saturday evening Mass, we had the whole day ahead of us. I suggested we start our morning with coffee and sandwiches at our usual Starbucks.
We ordered our standard two tall cappuccinos served in ceramic mugs. I chose my favorite egg, cheese, and chorizo sandwich, while Cynthia went with her trusty chicken, cheese, and pesto. Good food, warm coffee, and great company—it was the perfect, low-key start to our day.
Back home, I encouraged Cynthia to rest and recharge while I plotted our next move. I had a lunch idea brewing: instead of sticking to our usual neighborhood haunts, why not explore somewhere new in Bonifacio Global City?
By 11 a.m., we were on the road.
Before the drive, I asked Google Chrome for a few restaurant recommendations. The algorithm clearly knows my soft spot for Spanish and Mediterranean flavors. It pointed us toward three solid options: Bar Pintxos, Bueno Tapas & Wine, and FETA Mediterranean. After a quick scan of the reviews, Bueno emerged as the clear frontrunner.
When we stepped inside, we were greeted by a spacious, stylishly appointed space—equally fitted for a relaxed weekend lunch or a lively after-work gathering. A handsome bar anchored one side, brimming with spirits and wine. (Though beer enthusiasts have a tighter selection, limited to Spanish classics like Moritz and Estrella Galicia—a minor trade-off!)
We shared three classic tapas: callos, Manchego cheese croquettes, and chorizo picante.
The callos arrived rich and fragrant, generously loaded with tender tripe, chorizo, and garbanzo beans, in a thick, deeply savory sauce. But disappointingly without oxtail. The Manchego croquettes were a standout—golden on the outside, yielding to a warm, delightfully gooey cheese center. They were easily worth a repeat visit. For the final dish, we trusted our server's recommendation and picked the chorizo picante. Sizzling and bold, it hit all the right notes.
Accompanied by a cold Spanish beer for me and a refreshing fruit drink for Cynthia, three tapas turned out to be the exact sweet spot for a satisfying lunch. Our little BGC culinary adventure was off to a fantastic start!
After lunch, we took a leisurely stroll along the High Street South dining strip. The area was buzzing with energy and lined with intriguing spots. We spotted enticing names like Bolero, Cochi, Tartufo, Dennis, Texas Roadhouse, and The Pearl Room (I made a mental note for its unlimited oysters). With so many vibrant options clustered together, our future Sunday date itineraries are practically booked!
From there, we headed to Mitsukoshi. The mall was brimming with weekend crowds, and even finding a parking spot was a bit of a trek. By the time we walked in, it was past 3 p.m.—a bit too late for another round of coffee, but perfect timing for a cold, sweet treat.
Gelato to the rescue!
I stuck to my timeless favorite, rich dark chocolate, while Cynthia chose matcha. Mine was deep, velvety, and indulgent, while she thoroughly enjoyed the smooth, grassy sweetness of her green tea cup. Sometimes, the best moments come from pivoting mid-day.
Before heading home, we wandered down to the Japanese supermarket to pick up a few essentials. I picked up Japanese sausages and dashi stock for my kitchen experiments, while Cynthia happily browsed the aisles for her own favorites.
And just like that, another Sunday date came to a gentle close. We tried a new restaurant, shared delicious tapas, explored a vibrant corner of BGC, and treated ourselves to gelato. Nothing overly dramatic or complex—and that, really, is what makes these days so memorable.
It’s never about grand gestures or lavish destinations. It’s about slowing down together, sharing a good meal, discovering new flavors, and cherishing the quiet joy of each other's company.
Another Sunday date, another collection of happy memories. Until our next adventure!
